An audio book - a short story.
Policeman Simon Serrailler, receiving an honour at Buckingham Palace, lacking a hand, recalls the start of his career when, off duty, he chased a suspect who fell and died. He'd thought he'd be disciplined (he wasn't sure he'd been following the right person) but he'd been praised for getting rid of a bad person.
