"Contemporary Views on the Little Magazine Scene" by Wolfgang Gortschacher

Much of interest, especially if you send to UK little magazines. Amongst the points I noted were

  • Critics seem hard to find and burn out quickly.
  • In the UK a max of 1% of Arts grants go to literature. In Wales it's sometimes 8%.
  • To have a book published you need to have a rather different career trajectory to someone simply interested in being in mags - it helps to win competitions, do readings and make friends.
  • Little magazines vary widely in the amount of solicited poetry they include.
  • Short stories seem to suffer far more than poetry when times get tough.
