"Staying On" by Paul Scott (Heinemann, 1977)

I've been disappointed by most comic novels ('Lucky Jim', etc.). This one starts well. In the middle the humour fades into the background to make way for more concentrated serious material, portraying a couple who haven't communicated much, and have left it too late.
