"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel (Canongate, 2001)
Until the twist near the end I wasn't sure that the sea part of the book was working. Unlike most twists there was scarcely a clue leading up to it. And I
needed the "interpretation" provided in the text. The religion thread faded.
