"Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe (Penguin, 2001)

First published in 1958. The tribe's ancestral explanations of weather and health (straight from The Golden Bough) meet the white man's religion and laws, but even before then the tribe had guns. Friend turned against friend because it was the will of the gods. Everyone understands this. Once they're off-duty an oracle is a different person.
