"Noughts and Crosses" by Malorie Blackman (Corgi, 2002)

"Not suitable for younger readers", it says, but it's a good read for older children, centred on a relationship, with some school bullying, first love and social prejudices in the mix. The ending could have been left as a cliffhanger, but is actually an obit.
