"Obelisk" by Stephen Baxter (Orion, 2016)

SF short stories. Sections entitled "Proxima-ultima", "Other yesterdays", "Other todays", "Other tomorrows". I could understand why readers might give up after reading the first story, "On Chryse Plain". The second story, "A Journey to Amasia" is distinctly better. It's worth reading on. The stories I prefer are later on. Most of the stories have a science idea - rats with wormholes, people resistant to vacuums, etc. "Artefacts" is more the type of story I was hoping for. "StarCall" is perhaps the next best piece in that section.

In general I'd rather read stories with less exposition and more character development.
