"Black Hearts" by Doug Johnstone

An audio book. Set in Edinburgh.

Dorothy is at Kathleen's funeral. She (along with her female offspring) runs an undertakers firm and a Private Invesigation firm. She's 72 and American. Her lover Thomas is 57, Swedish, and a policeman. Kathleen's husband Eddie has gone missing. Kathleen's son is Dan and her brother-in-law is Mike. There's a rumpus.

Jenny (Dot's mother) in self-defence set alight ex-husband Craig at sea a year ago. Craig abducted Hannah's sister. Fiona was previously married to Craig.

Jenny is having sex with her young therapist, Brandon. She is Hannah's mum. Hannah is doing an astrophysics PhD ("Every Galaxy has a black heart"). She's married to Indy, an Indian woman.

Laura, the daughter of Kathleen, has been stalking Hannah. Jenny discovers that Eddie faked his death to avoid having to come out. Eddie is then found murdered. The police discover that Hannah left her mother's body in the house for a week before reporting it.

Mike killed Eddie, I think. Laura tries to recover her mother's body from the undertakers, disabling Hannah and Indy. Stella sets fire to the undertakers without realising who's in there. Hannah and Indy are saved.

I didn't care about any of the characters - which is fine. Trouble is, I didn't think much of the plot either. Farce?
