"The Phone Call" by A.J. Campbell

An audio book.

Joey's on the top bunk, waiting for a call. He has 9 days to pay a debt. He's still living with his mother and siblings (brother Dylan and sister Megan)- his father's dead. He has friends (Becka etc) who he works with at a shop and meets at a pub. He gets a phone call, does a delivery and gets £50. His car and the central heating need repairing so he does another delivery. He takes the package home. Dylan noses around and discovers it's a gun.

When he delivers the package he discovers the client is Becka's mum. She tells him that her husband has been having an affair for 2 years and she's going to kill him. Instead, she shoots herself. He thinks she's dead so he runs off in her husband's jacket with the gun, trying to remove evidence. His mother has invited a man home for a meal - her first date as a widow. He's a detective.

Becka's mum recovers a little. [I wonder if she'll lend him money, or pay him to scare her husband?]. He does more deliveries, collecting lots of cash. He discovers that the man he's delivering for is Becka's mother's brother, Ronnie. He used to work for Becka's father, expecting to become an co-owner, but he was sacked.

Becka suddenly wants to sleep with Joey. He says he's busy. He wants to confess to Becky or the police. The pressure's getting too much.

The mother dies. Joey discovers that Ronnie blackmailed potential clients when he worked for Becka's dad, hence his dismissal. Ronnie and Becka's mum witnessed their mother's suicide when they were infants. Joey breaks into Ronnie's safe and photographs incriminating evidence. He and a fellow courier plan to confront him. He dies, a car falling on him as he was repairing it. An accident? He wasn't alone at the time. Ronnie has told Becka's mum that her husband was having an affair, and had suggested murder (his way of getting revenge).

5 months later, Joey proposes to Becka on holiday. She says that she killed Ronnie.

Quite a short novel. A tight plot - at times it feels too tight.
