"The Night Always Comes" by Willy Vlautin

An audio book. Lynette (30) lives with Kenny (32, mental age 3) and mum Wynette. She works at a bakery, starting at 4am, then attends accountancy lectures, with Kenny all the time. She's had mental problems, which people use against her. She is about to buy the house they're renting when her mother uses their funds to buy a car.

The backstory is gradually filled in - long monologues and flashbacks. After her father left (couldn't cope with Kenny) her mother gained a live-in boyfriend who hit on Lynette. Lynette didn't tell her mother in case she got chucked out. At 16 she left home without warning. When she came back she tried to kill herself. She met Jack - sensitive, Kenny liked him, They were engaged, lived together. But she had bouts of despair manifesting as anger/jealousy against Jack. She apologied each time but in the end Jack was scared, and left her. She was pregnant and had an abortion.

Lynette wants the house. It will change their lives. She's been planning the purchase for 3 years, becoming an escort earning $1k a day sometimes. She goes round her clients, asking for help. Some are sympathetic, giving money, but say they don't want her to contact them again. She tries to call in favours - burning bridges, dealing with double-crossing. Her friend Gloria owes her $8k. With the help of a work colleague who's on parole she steals Gloria's safe and gets it opened, risking her life. She just wants what's hers.

When she gets home with $93k she tries to tidy up the loose ends. She has cuts, which her mother helps her with. She tells her mother for the first time that she paid to have therapy. She's nice to her mother even when her mother says she never wanted to buy the house and doesn't want to be under the same roof as her. Her mother says she's going to live with a friend - she's been planning it for a while. She's going to take Kenny. Lynette clears the house out. At the end her mother and a friend both tell Lynette that she's a good person who made a few mistakes. She's happy with that. She drives away ready to start a new life.

"was white in colour" doesn't impress me.
