"Secrets of happiness" by Joan Silber

An audio book.

7 linked stories. Many of the stories have a span of decades, jumping ahead a few years at a time, looking at what happens when a relationship ends (the people often keep in touch, or even continue living together) or a father dies (how is the wealth split?). In the first, Ethan comes out at 18. He finds that his father had a second family. His father dies. In a later story the PoV is one of his half-brothers. Later still the PoV is a woman living in Leeds. It takes a while for the connection to become clear. It's another piece where a will matters. The woman's American lover dies. The woman's mother tells her she'll feel better when she finds someone else.

Frequently, characters have S.E. Asia connections. Sweatshops feature. In each section there are often long bios of other characters.

Begins quietly. Grew on me.
