"The March" by E.L. Doctorow (Little,Brown, 2005)

My lack of historical knowledge didn't prove to be a problem - it's an easy read. He slips from 3rd to 1st person without warning sometimes (a trick I'll use) and after a big event the scene usually switches quickly.
