"Killing Jericho" by William Hussey

An audio book.

Scott Jericho, disgraced detective, now works in a travelling fair, the one his father runs. His mother is dead. He introduces us to the jargon - e.g. joshkins - non circus folk. He's haunted by an old case involving 3 kids - the Marinovskis. His unprofessional violence relating to that crime is why he was put away. An academic, Campbell, pays him to continue investigating some cases that seem related, emulating old traveller tales (freakshow curios, etc). Kerrigan (the suspect who Jericho attacked) threatens him.

He went to Oxford University, came out, lived with Harry until Harry killed his father. Harry's now a librarian at Bradbury End, the library he often works in threatened with closure. Scott hopes they can be friends again. After university, Scott became a thug-for-hire. Kerrigan and his mates turn up at an anti-mosque gathering (one of several prejudices mentioned in the book).

Pete Garris, an ex-colleague, helps Scott. His wife has just gone into a hospice.

The victims are offspring of the benefactors of a rebuilt bridge - where the traveller's bridge tragedy happened.

Scott's suspicious about events - too many coincidences. He wonders who has been orchestrating events. He realises that Garris isn't even married.
